Getting started

Create the book workspace from the manuscript you intend to prepare. If the book shares characters, places, or invented language with earlier projects, import that prep before you begin review.

Upload a manuscript

Start from the Books dashboard.

  1. 1Click New Book.
  2. 2Enter the title you want to see in the dashboard and prep workspace.
  3. 3Choose the manuscript file. PrepBoss accepts the manuscript formats supported by the uploader in the app.
  4. 4Review any import options before starting processing.

Import existing prep

Use import when the new book belongs to a series or repeats names, locations, invented words, or voice references from an earlier project.

  1. 1In the upload flow, choose the previous book you want to reuse as a prep source.
  2. 2Select the characters that should carry forward into the new workspace.
  3. 3Select any prior books whose vocabulary entries should be copied into the new project.
  4. 4After processing, review imported entries in context. Treat imports as a starting point, not as final decisions.

What gets added by you

Import choices are user decisions. PrepBoss can carry structured character and vocabulary data forward, but you decide which older prep is relevant to the new manuscript.

Wait for generated prep

Longer manuscripts can take time to analyze. When processing finishes, open the book and begin with script review before polishing reference tables.

First review target

Start with the Text tab. Speaker attribution, scene context, vocabulary, and character details all make more sense while you can see the passage that created them.
